2002 Lancer: oil light started coming on at idle..changed oil

This answer was rated:

2002 Lancer OZ - oil light started coming on at idle. Changed switch and changed oil. Went away for a while. Now light back on. First came on below 500 RPM, then started coming on below 1000 rpm, last night started coming on below 1500 rpm.
Is the pump shot? Any other possibilities other than pump?

tripletauto :

hello

tripletauto :

sounds like the pump is going out

tripletauto :

could also have excessive clearance in the engine bearings

tripletauto :

i would recommend checking oil pressure with a mechanical gauge and be sure it is oil pressure related and not electrical

tripletauto :

from what you describe sounds like the pump

tripletauto :

Oil pressureat idleStandard value29 kPa or more
at 3,500 r/minStandard value294 - 686 kPa
tripletauto :

here is specs to measure pressure

tripletauto :

crankshaft main bearing clearance should be 0.02 - 0.03 mm

Customer:

What is involved in replacing the pump?
Can I drop the oil pan to get to it?

Customer:

Or is this one of those pumps thats driven off crank and have to pull front of motor off to get to it? Its a 4G94 engine acording to the owners manual.

tripletauto :

driven off of crank

tripletauto :

also make sure oil pan is not bent

tripletauto :

Customer:

Have any idea what somehing line this costs to have repaired?

tripletauto :

if pan is bent any can cause screen to be resticted

Customer:

Ballpark or # XXXXX hours to fix.

tripletauto :

pays 5.5 hours labor to replace

tripletauto :

list on pump shows $251

tripletauto :

so roughly about $800 total

Customer:

So we are probably looking at 500-600 labor plus parts

tripletauto :

yes correct

Customer:

the shop i use is about 6 miles from house.

Customer:

with the oil light on, would it be safe to drive or should i have it towed

tripletauto :

if light is on do not drive

tripletauto :

not worth chance of burning engine up
