If i have a DD-214 from active duty that gives me an honorable discharge, could a dishonorable from the reserves override it?
Optional Information: State/Country relating to question: Delaware
The word on this is the it does not override it, but both apply. Easy huh?If you have an honorable Discharge, you can show that discharge to try and obtain the rights that it entails. GI Bill, right to medical care for service connected injury during that period that was honorably discharged. But they are going to use the date on the honorable....so if your ability to use the GI bill has passed based on that honorable discharge, it's over. The dishonorable discharge can't be used to bring you up to date.
So if i am currently using my GI Bill under the honorable discharge, then the dishonorable (which i've failed to say hasn't come into play yet) cant stop what i've already started?
The way this is being applied out there in the real work (with variations) is that they can grant you and maintain the GI Bill based on an honorable discharge. It doesn't have to be the last discharge you got, just one within the time limit for starting the GI Bill.
What type of affect would a dishonorable have on the rest of my civilXXXXX XXXXXfe? Could i use the honorable to get another government job or would it be over for that?
For the rest of your civilXXXXX XXXXXfe, they'll likely look a bit more deeply than just what you offer them in terms of an honorable. To receive a dishonorable, you have to go to Court Martial and that is a criminal record that will not being going away unless you appeal that decision now. The DD Form 293 process for upgrading a characterization of service is not applicable to those granted by court martial.
