Customer Question

I am using Excel 2010. I have simple formulas that won't calculate. I have checked all of the usual solutions and I think I need to send my spreadsheet to you to check. Wes McMaster
JA: What's the make and model of your computer? And what version of Excel are you using?
Customer: Excel 2010. Computer was custom built 4 years ago.
JA: Have you installed any updates recently?
Customer: Not that I recall because updates are automatic.
JA: Anything else you want the Microsoft Office expert to know before I connect you?

Hello my name is ***** ***** I'd be happy to assist you with this. Can you attach the spreadsheet to this message and tell me what cells you are trying to formulate?

Customer: replied 21 days ago.
Mike
The formulas in cells N19 to N24 are not working. I would be grateful if you could explain why and how I fix this.

I'll take a look now.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

They actually do seem to be working. For some reason it just so happens that those results come out to the same. When I calculate just the numbers that the formulas represent, I come up with the same results as the formulas in the cells.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

I don't know how you managed to make that happen but it's quite interesting.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

Also if you change any of the numbers in the referenced cells the result changes.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

Are you seeing the same thing I'm seeing?

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

I don't know if you can see what I'm talking about but if not I can show you what I mean.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

for example, the formula in N24 reads =M24/R$129^O24

M24 = 35970.44

R129 = 1.00625

O24 = 8

if you calculate 35970.44/1.00625^8

the result will be 34221.47 which is the same thing the formula is giving.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

You change any of those numbers in the formula, even just a decimal number, and the result will change.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

So it appears that the formulas are working.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

I said if you change any of those numbers in the formula but I meant in the example above.

Expert:  MikeW replied 21 days ago.

Are you there?

Customer: replied 21 days ago.
MikeSorry had to go away. You are right. My problem is that I intuitively expected different answers. Thank you. Wes

Yes I understand and I had to really look at it hard for the same reason. Had me going too!
