Can you tell me when did this all happen and was the computer fine yesterday?
This happened about a month ago. We have different users on it, and the main one we use is affected. Almost all icons on desktop show internet explorer icon
Please follow my instructions to fix the issue carefully.
Hold the Windows key on your computer and press R
This will open a run dialog box
In Run Dialog box type: regedit and hit Enter
This will open Registry Editor
Move to the folder location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\software\microsoft\windows\currentvershion\explorer\flexts\
I am afraid I will loose all my files. This is above my level of knowledge.

after typing in regedit and enter, a window came up,as always, that says "View and Track Downloads". Nothing about opening Registry Editor.
That's not correct.
Did you hold the Windows key and press R while holding the Windows key?
Yes, does it need to be upper case R?
no, it's not case sensitive.
just type regedit
Same window opened, View and Track Downloads after I typed regedit and hit enter.
Something else appears to be wrong with the system.

Has this been going on for a month?
Yes. I can open some files under another user, but then can't get on internet. I have to go back to my Husband's user for that, but we can't open any programs on the desktop that have the internet explorer icon on them.
