This answer was rated:

I have Microsoft Office 15 and Windows 8. Word & Powerpoint both work, however everytime I try to open an older Excel file (.xls) I get the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program" I have tried unchecking the box in advanced settings that ignores Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). What else can I do?

come back to me when you have run the re-install please
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Hi James,

Okay, now I'm in trouble. I uninstalled Office. Then I went back to the Microsoft site to re-download & re-install and it won't do it. I think part of the problem might have been that I originally downloaded the 32 bit version of Office 2013. Windows 8 is 64 bit, right? Well now I tried to download the 64 bit and it won't let me because it says that I still have a 32 bit version on my PC, even though I uninstalled it. This happened to me once before when trying to fix the problem myself and I had to completely wipe my PC clean back to factory defaults. I really don't want to have to do that again, but I might have to. What do you recommend?
