I have a string in column A1 -A5001 with the same text for

Resolved Question:

I have a string in column A1 -A5001 with the same text for the first 28 characters:

Example: /404.html?page=/find-a-park/

After that there is a 2-3 digit numeral and then different text that I need to Identify and count as an entry
Example:
11-text1
12-text2
101-text3
etc

So the string looks like this:
In Column A1:
/404.html?page=/find-a-park/11-Text1&from=http://www.domain.com/find-a-park/

Then in B1 there is the number of time this occurred: 3000

In column A2:
/404.html?page=/find-a-park/12-Text2&from=http://www.domain.com/find-a-park/

I have a count in B2: 2500

I might have much the same string in column A3 but where it came from is different:
/404.html?page=/find-a-park/11-Text1&from=http://www.domain2.com/

I have a count in B3: 250

I want to Identify and sum the count totals of column A So at the end I would have a report that states the following:

11-Text1 = 3250
12-Text2 = 2500

Thank you for your question, my name is Richard.

To do this, you would use a countif statement.

So for the cell next to the totals for 11-Text1

You would have

=countif(A1:A5001,"11-Text1")

Which will tell you how many times 11-Text1 occurs in Column A.

You can then sum these count totals at the bottom of the countif totals by using

=Sum(Start Cell:End Cell)

If you have difficulties doing this, upload the sheet and I can do it for you. Use my below instructions to do this please

- Click the following link: http://www.wikisend.com
- Upload the file to that website
- Once it is uploaded, the resulting page will display a "File ID" number.
- Please, give me that "File ID Number"

Thank you

You did not include the total counts in the B Column which is what I need to count.

A1: Text1 B1:3000

A2: Text2 B2:2500

A3: Text1 B3: 250

so on and so on for 5000 cells

because you did not even see the B column description, I wonder how much you studied my detailed question

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
Everything was 404 messages and not actual links Scott in your message, this is a part of it, but your entire message looked like this.

So the string looks like this:
In Column A1:
/404.html?page=/find-a-park/11-Text1&from=http://www.domain.com/find-a-park/

Then in B1 there is the number of time this occurred: 3000

In column A2:
/404.html?page=/find-a-park/12-Text2&from=http://www.domain.com/find-a-park/

I have a count in B2: 2500

I might have much the same string in column A3 but where it came from is different:
/404.html?page=/find-a-park/11-Text1&from=http://www.domain2.com/

This is why I ask for a copy of the file so I can view it correctly.

Scott,

Your request regarding the additional columns is not clear, if you scroll to the top of the page, you can see this.

this is why I asked for the file please, so I can see and do this myself.

- Click the following link: http://www.wikisend.com
- Upload the file to that website
- Once it is uploaded, the resulting page will display a "File ID" number.
- Please, give me that "File ID Number"

Thank you

You don't yet seem to understand what I am asking so it won;'t do any good to send you a file as the answer will still be wrong

I just spent 30 minutes with the expert above and he never answered it because he never understood it. I am looking for an answer to an excel question. Are you an Excel expert?

Expert:  The-PC-Guy replied 1 year ago.
yes I am

So

if I am to understand what you want

you want to know how many times that particular portion of the text occurrs.

for example how many times 11-Text1 occurs, how many times 12-Text2 occurs, how many times 13-whateverthistextis occurrs, and so on?

And you want to know how many times just that part of column A occurs regardless of the ending url.

Unless I misunderstood your request.

Please advise
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

The totals are in b1-b5000 but there are many different page referrals and its the total referrals in the B column I need to count. I am sending snapshot of what the report will look like using a small sample. The highlighted cells are the multiple park occurrencesExcel Report example.

Expert:  The-PC-Guy replied 1 year ago.
ok, I know exactly what you need now.

Here is an example based on your screen shot

I had to add a 3rd column, We will call it collumn C for now, the formula in that column separates that specific part of the text in column A

The pivot table sheet, sums up all of B rows that match the text so you get the values you are looking for.

Both column C formula, and the pivot table must be added to your sheet for this to work.

If you need help integrating this into your sheet I can help with that, just let me know

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Ok So were close but the totals in your example for Text1 show 615,000 the actual number (SUM) is 620,000.

Once this is clarified then please help me get it in to my spreadsheet so I can test against the actual numbers. Then we should be done.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

One other thing the example you sent had only 3 parks, I have 87 spread over 5000 links. so we have to pull the up the 3rd occurence of "-" to id it completely

Example:

/find-a-park/19-woodridge-ny-

/find-a-park/107-fredericksburg-texas-

Expert:  The-PC-Guy replied 1 year ago.
Ok, the easiest way for me to integrate this into your sheet would be to have you upload the actual file.

Setting up pivot tables can be a pain, and I would like to make this as easy as possible.

So can you upload your file to the

www.wikisend.com

after uploading they will give you a download link and file id#

paste that here, so I can put this directly into your sheet.
Expert:  The-PC-Guy replied 1 year ago.
if you have trouble uploading the file, let me know, and I will find another way to help you
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

so we have to pull the up the 3rd occurrence of "-" (after the first 28 characters) to id it completely

I think so I have one count off I am using to check but I believe its because I have more rows then I sent you. Can you send me any directions I need to add the extra rows...That way I won;t hold up the process and I can close the question.

Expert:  The-PC-Guy replied 1 year ago.
yes

can you please tell me which version of excel you are using so I can give you specific instructions on how to update the data?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

2010

Expert:  The-PC-Guy replied 1 year ago.
ok.

to add more rows

first on sheet 1

add whatever data you need to columns A and B

then copy the formula in column C down for as many rows as you have data

then goto the pivot table sheet

click anywhere on the pivot table data, clicking the heading in Row 3 works fine too.

then once you do that look at your Ribbon tool bar, that is the tool bar across the top with all of the icons on it. You will notice that Pivot Table Tools has been added and is in pink.

Under pivot table tools click the word "options"

then on the tool bar click the "refresh" icon, that will update the pivot table to include any new data.

Let me know if any of this is unclear
