What I want to do: 1. Barbi plays a game on August 1 and

Resolved Question:

What I want to do:

1. Barbi plays a game on August 1 and gets 500 points, say she is in second place. Those 200 points are updated on the second sheet automatically in a date cell of August 1.

*(the name is XXXXX XXXXX points that automatically update on the next sheet (names & totals) on a specific date.)

2. Barbi plays another game August 14 and gets 1000 points, say she got first place this time. Those 1000 points are updated on the second sheet automatically on a date cell of August 14.

3. The totals for all of Barbi's games for August will appear underneath her name.

* I want to be able to add any name/player and have this process work as the final result.

*I have a spreadsheet of what I have worked on so far that I would be happy to send.

(you guys are amazing and I hope you can help me out)

The-PC-Guy :

Thanks for using JustAnswer. My name isXXXXX will do whatever I can to answer your question

The-PC-Guy :

can you send what you have

Customer:

Did you receive the spreadsheet?

The-PC-Guy :

can you please goto this question

The-PC-Guy :

i was waiting for your response there

The-PC-Guy :

and you never responded

The-PC-Guy :

I don

The-PC-Guy :

t know which question im working off of

The-PC-Guy :

you have duplicate questions

Customer:

I'm sorry about that...I was changed to another expert and had to make another deposit...sorry for the wait

Customer:

It is the same question I originally posted

The-PC-Guy :

so we are working here

The-PC-Guy :

the other is a duplicate

The-PC-Guy :

i have the file

Customer:

correct

The-PC-Guy :

can you describe what it is you need

The-PC-Guy :

i see dates on the 2nd sheet

The-PC-Guy :

but none on the 1st

Customer:

on the file that I gave you if you insert an x amount of players then the points update

Customer:

those points are associated with a name, say John Doe or whatever

Customer:

on the second sheet those points automatically show up again on the date that they were won

Customer:

corresponding to the name that won them

The-PC-Guy :

ok i think i got it

The-PC-Guy :

so if billy got 450

Customer:

underneath are the totals for all points won on any date

The-PC-Guy :

on sheet 1

The-PC-Guy :

you want sheet 2 to also say 450

The-PC-Guy :

where billy is

Customer:

correct

Customer:

without copying and pasting

The-PC-Guy :

ok

The-PC-Guy :

so far so good

The-PC-Guy :

now

The-PC-Guy :

the problem is

The-PC-Guy :

you didn't specify which date it should go it

The-PC-Guy :

nowhere on sheet 1 is a date

Customer:

thats true I don't...where is the best place for the date to go

Customer:

I chose sheet2 but maybe that isn't the best

The-PC-Guy :

getting the points to = the name on sheet 2 is easy

The-PC-Guy :

its just a matter of determining what date it is

The-PC-Guy :

i assume you are going to keep an ongoing record on sheet 1

The-PC-Guy :

so my suggestion would be to add a column to sheet 1 with dates

The-PC-Guy :

so then the score can be set to the name and the date

Customer:

I wanted the number of player to be on sheet1 so that when you entered an x number of players the points are automatic

Customer:

and then all you had to do would be enter names

The-PC-Guy :

now we are talking about something entirely different

The-PC-Guy :

at first it was just to match the names of sheet 1

Customer:

and the names show up on the second sheet with their points without cutting and pasting

The-PC-Guy :

to those of sheeet 2

Customer:

with the points that they won for that date

Customer:

match the names to sheet 2 with the value/points that they won in a cell date

Customer:

the names change though

The-PC-Guy :

this would require you to enter the names on both sheets

Customer:

anybody could be in 1st place and then be in 2nd place

Customer:

yes I will have to enter a database of all the player names in sheet2

The-PC-Guy :

correct

The-PC-Guy :

here is what I would suggest

The-PC-Guy :

let me know if this would work

The-PC-Guy :

I would say enter the names and scores in sheet 1

The-PC-Guy :

along with a new column in sheet 1 for date

The-PC-Guy :

each name would have a score

The-PC-Guy :

and a date

The-PC-Guy :

then

The-PC-Guy :

enter names in a single column in sheet 2

The-PC-Guy :

and the scores can be autofilled to the appropriate names and dates

The-PC-Guy :

does this make sense?

Customer:

yes it does

Customer:

can i still put in the x number of players and get the automatic points as it is on sheet 1 now?

The-PC-Guy :

not following what you mean by automatic points on sheet 1

Customer:

in sheet 1 if you put in say for example 50 players then the 1st, 2nd, etc places are given automatic points

Customer:

then you just input names

Customer:

so to modify what I have with what you are saying

The-PC-Guy :

what formula determines that?

Customer:

i have it in the points cell

Customer:

its just a multiplication

Customer:

of what the number of players are

The-PC-Guy :

its always going to follow that pattern

The-PC-Guy :

regardless of the number of players

Customer:

I have it set up so that it is multiplied by the number of players

Customer:

if you change the number of players the points will also change

The-PC-Guy :

i see that, the question is

The-PC-Guy :

the first 10 players will always get some multiple

The-PC-Guy :

then every other player

The-PC-Guy :

11 - infinity

The-PC-Guy :

will get .25

The-PC-Guy :

* number of players?

The-PC-Guy :

or .5 * num players?

Customer:

thats basically it

The-PC-Guy :

alrighty

The-PC-Guy :

that can be done via a macro

The-PC-Guy :

no formula would do that properly

Customer:

I have tried to learn about macro

Customer:

not very good and still learning

The-PC-Guy :

are you on a MAC or Windows?

Customer:

windows

The-PC-Guy :

ok

The-PC-Guy :

i can create a macro then

The-PC-Guy :

when you change the number of players

The-PC-Guy :

it will auto label 1st

The-PC-Guy :

- 50th

The-PC-Guy :

through xxxxx

The-PC-Guy :

and do the points according to your formula

The-PC-Guy :

if that would work

The-PC-Guy :

then i will do it that way

Customer:

which are multiplied by the number of players correct?

The-PC-Guy :

um yes

The-PC-Guy :

now the problem arises with the date thing

Customer:

as long as it is multiplied by the number of players...the people who want this are picky

The-PC-Guy :

if you want i could create a 2nd macro

The-PC-Guy :

with a button

The-PC-Guy :

that you push to populate sheet 2

The-PC-Guy :

you would just have to enter a date

The-PC-Guy :

in some cell

The-PC-Guy :

in sheet 1

The-PC-Guy :

would that work

Customer:

i'm tracking

Customer:

alright

Customer:

would this work on excel web app

The-PC-Guy :

as far as I know

The-PC-Guy :

sky drive

The-PC-Guy :

and office 365

Customer:

alright we'll give it a whirl

The-PC-Guy :

do not support macros

Customer:

I have skydrive

The-PC-Guy :

so it would not work on the web

The-PC-Guy :

is this supposed to be for a website

Customer:

the inputting of names is done by different people on the back end...

Customer:

they want to be able to add information anywhere

The-PC-Guy :

maybe excel is not the best solution then

The-PC-Guy :

have you condsidered a web scripting language

The-PC-Guy :

like PHP or javascript

The-PC-Guy :

PHP would be preferable

The-PC-Guy :

because it can be linked to a database

Customer:

yes I have...but then I would be the one inputting all the names instead of these other people...

The-PC-Guy :

you could have a simple web form

The-PC-Guy :

that could allow someone to enter a name

The-PC-Guy :

to the DB

The-PC-Guy :

then you can have a separate page

Customer:

I was thinking of exporting the final result as a chart/graph on the webpage

The-PC-Guy :

where you enter number of players

The-PC-Guy :

this is getting a little bit complicated now, if you wanted me to set up a web based thing with entry forms and a final report that tallies scores that is doable

The-PC-Guy :

you could hire me to do that

The-PC-Guy :

but if you want to do this in excel

Customer:

i'm not sure how to do that with the points formula

The-PC-Guy :

i know how to do it

The-PC-Guy :

as long as it is X number

The-PC-Guy :

times X percentage

Customer:

it would be like I have on the spreadsheet now

Customer:

the formula I mean

The-PC-Guy :

ok

The-PC-Guy :

then it will not work on the web

The-PC-Guy :

and will not work on skydrive

The-PC-Guy :

you would need a standalone office

The-PC-Guy :

2007, 2010 or 2013

Customer:

like an excel moderator

The-PC-Guy :

huh?

Customer:

alright to heck with skydrive...lets just stick with making the macro's

The-PC-Guy :

okay

The-PC-Guy :

do you have office 2007 or higher availible

Customer:

2013

The-PC-Guy :

that will work fine

Customer:

I mean 2010

The-PC-Guy :

that works too

The-PC-Guy :

lol

The-PC-Guy :

alright i will need some time to do this

The-PC-Guy :

do you want to check back in a couple of hours

Customer:

can I give my number in case im away from the computer

Customer:

or i can check back

The-PC-Guy :

they don't let us

The-PC-Guy :

but bookmark this webpage

The-PC-Guy :

for easy access

Customer:

alright i will check back in a couple hours

The-PC-Guy :

thanks

Customer:

hello again

The-PC-Guy :

hihi

The-PC-Guy :

uploading now

The-PC-Guy :

i really wanted to test it

The-PC-Guy :

looks ok to me

The-PC-Guy :

but we will find out

Customer:

true

The-PC-Guy :

ok remember that this is a macro workbook

The-PC-Guy :

you have to click enable content button when it opens

The-PC-Guy :

or macros will not work

The-PC-Guy :

also say yes to any security warnings

Customer:

enable content button

Customer:

got it

Customer:

ok

The-PC-Guy :

test it out

The-PC-Guy :

let me know if we need to do any changes

Customer:

alright here goes im opening now

The-PC-Guy :

hopefully not

The-PC-Guy :

and remember to rate my service when done

Customer:

im looking at it now

The-PC-Guy :

also a bonus would be very much appreciated because I put a lot of effort into this

The-PC-Guy :

ok

The-PC-Guy :

take your time

Customer:

i know you did and I really appreciate it

The-PC-Guy :

see if you can find any bugs

The-PC-Guy :

and when you do add them to your soup and cook for 20 minutes

The-PC-Guy :

lol

The-PC-Guy :

bugs

The-PC-Guy :

ahh never mind

The-PC-Guy :

bugs and bytes

The-PC-Guy :

hehe computer terms are always funny

Customer:

i take it that I will need a new spreadsheet for every new date, correct? because it only populates for 8/4 not 8/5

The-PC-Guy :

all you have to do is change the date

The-PC-Guy :

and press the button

The-PC-Guy :

and it will populate for that date

Customer:

can the points from 8/4 show up in the totals and be added to reflect 8/5 points?

Customer:

and 8/6 etc

The-PC-Guy :

um, i am not sure what you mean

Customer:

the number that shows up in 8/4, can that number show up in the totals box underneath the name and by updated (added) from points that are received on other dates (8/5, 8/6, etc)

The-PC-Guy :

so the total in 8/4

The-PC-Guy :

from Cell D3

The-PC-Guy :

you want that to sum up points from 8/3 and 8/2 or something

Customer:

if its possible

The-PC-Guy :

so a running total

The-PC-Guy :

each day it increases

The-PC-Guy :

including all previdous days

Customer:

just to show cumulative points added

Customer:

not preevious

The-PC-Guy :

you can just use formulas

The-PC-Guy :

for that

Customer:

if 8/4 is 200 points then the total is 200 points

Customer:

if 8/5 is 200 points then the total would reflect 400 points

Customer:

if I add a formula to add it will that mess up the macro

The-PC-Guy :

i think you mean running total

The-PC-Guy :

no

The-PC-Guy :

formulas in total dont effect macro

The-PC-Guy :

the macro just looks at names and dates

The-PC-Guy :

and ignores anything else

Customer:

so I can add new names

The-PC-Guy :

in cell C3 you can put

Customer:

?

The-PC-Guy :

=C2 + B3

The-PC-Guy :

then just copy that formula over the entire row

The-PC-Guy :

that will do cumulatives sumes

The-PC-Guy :

and you can add names

The-PC-Guy :

as long as you add the name to both sheets

The-PC-Guy :

and they stay in the same columns

Customer:

yes

The-PC-Guy :

ok, will leave it to you to rate then

Customer:

whew I really appreciate all the work you did

The-PC-Guy :

you can always post back here after rating if you have further questions after playing with it for a bit

The-PC-Guy :
