However having dealt with a lot of office on macs and replaced memory on multiple macs this did not always solve the problem. What version of Office for Mac are you running? What version of OS X are you running? Have you recently installed/changed any memory?

Did not touch the memory. OS X 10.8.4, Office for Mac 2011

I have re-installed office for mac - same problem

Does it occur when you start office or during when you are using it? It might take a while to narrow down the problem, even microsoft's website does not point to a single fix but multiple possibilities. I think to start in safe mode by holding down the shift key while starting would be the first place to start and see what happens. Other suggestions listed you have already done but might need to do again in a specific order. Please note starting in safe mode will disable a few things so depending on what else you are running on the mac you might run into other issues.

I have uninstalled office for mac, and re-installed - I am busy downloading all the updates. If this does not correct the porblem, I will restart in safe mode - will keep you posted
