Have you tried opening a new word document then click file --> save as. It should open the location the file was last saved in. Hopefully that will also be the location of the file you are looking for. in that save window you can look through and see if the file is there also change the file type drop down to doc and docx to be sure you are seeing all file types.

If you still cannot locate the file, let's take a look in the auto save location click this link c:\users\%username%\appdata\roaming\microsoft\word

in that folder you should see other folders with the file name you are looking for open the folder and there should be a file with the extension .asd change it to a .docx extension and open it. This might be the file you are looking for. If it doesn't open change it to a .doc extension

Let me know if neither option works and we can try some other options.

for xp you will need to navigate to this location using my computer c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data\Microsoft\word
