I had a couple of temporary word docs running that werent

This answer was rated:

I had a couple of temporary word docs running that weren't saved under any particular name, just document1, document2, etc and disappeared over night (power glitch or something???). Can I recover them somehow? They don't show up in word recovery like sometimes happens when power is lost.

Mike :

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer! My name is XXXXX XXXXX I would be glad to assist you with your issue today.

Customer:

what do I need to do?

Mike :

hi there

Mike :

which version of word and which operating system?

Customer:

word 2003, Vista

Mike :

do you know if the auto save feature is turned on?

Customer:

not sure, how do I check?

Mike :

go to the tools menu click options then look at the save tab

Mike :

there is a choice for Always create backup copy

Customer:

that option isn't checked

Mike :

OK, well your odds are now pretty slim

Customer:

so not do-able?

Mike :

on the save tab is also Save AutoRecover information every [] minutes

Mike :

what does that one say?

Customer:

10 minutes

Mike :

ok, that improves our odds

Mike :

close word and reopen it and lets see if you get the auto revoer pane on the left

Customer:

the recovery panel that I have seen sometimes doesn't come up, just the Office Online panel on the right

Mike :

OK, a couple more tricks before we cry uncle

Mike :

click the start button and in the search box type in *.tmp

Mike :

that will find al temporary files. see if any have the names like doc1.tmp doc2.tmp or document1.tmp

Customer:

I don't get a return of any temp files. Just "no items found"

Mike :

OK, last lets do a search for ~*.*

Mike :

stepping away for one minute. brb

Mike :

back

Customer:

got results but nothing that matches those docs

Mike :

OK annd while you were searching a did a search on my Microsoft Technet subscription to see if there were any other tricks I was missing, but this pretty much exhausts it

Mike :

I would say that if you didn't do so when we were there, I would go back to the Save tab and check the autosave box

Mike :

will improve your chances the next time

Mike :

Sorry they were not recoverable

Mike :

Is there anything else I can do for you?

Customer:

OK thanks

Mike :

Have a great day
