Customer Question

My WordPerfect Office X$ program will not launch and I get an error message saying that a file or files are corrupted and to reinstall the program. I have completely uninstalled the program and reinstalled it from the original CD, but I still get this same message and the program will not start up. I even purchased WordPerfect X5, hoping that a newer version would work. No dice. I still get the same error message (Error:38 - WordPerfect Office files have been damaged or modified. Please reinstall from your original source.) Even though I have used two different uninstaller programs that clean the windows registry, I still cannot get either X4 or X5 to launch. Have you heard of this happening before, and if so, any suggestions on what I can do to make my program functional again?

Hello Phillip,

  • Run CHKDSK to fix any soft errors on your hard drive.

Click the start button at the lower left corner of your screen.
    Click on RUN...
    Type cmd and click OK.
Type CHKDSK and press the enter key.

-----

  • Wait for the procedure to complete.

  • Do not schedule yet.

  • Send the results first as directed below.
    -----
Right-click on the text and choose SELECT ALL.
Then go to the justanswer window and select PASTE so I can see the results.

  • You have serious problems with your hard drive.
  • Backup your important data to a flash drive or external hard drive now in case your hard drive dies.
  • Do not save anything your current hard drive because that might cause a total failure.
  • Then perform the procedure below to see if we can save the current hard drive

-----

  • For Windows XP:
  • Click the start button at the lower left corner of your screen.
    Click on RUN...
    Type cmd and click OK.

  • Type CHKDSK /F and press the Enter key.

  • (CHKDSK /F has a space between CHKDSK and /F.)
  • If it asks to schedule, press Y (yes) to schedule a repair for the next restart and restart using the Windows start menu.

-----

  • Wait for the procedure to complete.

  • It may take hours to complete depending on the problems with the hard drive so do this overnight if possible without interruption.

-----

  • If it does not pause to do the CHKDSK automatically, we will need the Windows CD/DV.

I ran chkdsk /f and then deleted and reinstalled the WordPerfect X5 program. Unfortunately, when I try to use WordPerfect, I still get the same error message: 38 - WordPerfect Office files have been damaged or modified. Please reinstall from your original source.

  • Try repairing the Windows .net framework and reboot:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17851

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

I downloaded and installed the windows .net framework and rebooted. I then ran the WordPerfect Office setup program and asked it to repair any problems with the program. But I still get the same error message and cannot get the program to load. I am wondering if there is something on the computer that has not been deleted by any of the undelete programs I have run that is keeping WordPerfect from operating like it should. I know one time I had problems with McAfee viruscan not being completely deleted by its undelete program and McAfee sent me a proprietary undelete program, which completely cleaned off everything from the hard drive and allowed me to do a clean install. This is getting really frustrating, but WorkPerfect (Corel) is not helpful because they are hard to get to for technical support. If we cannot resolve this problem, do I still have to pay? I am wondering if I should have gone straight to Corel to begin with.

Since we started this process, not only has my problem with WordPerfect not been solved, but my computer has become increasingly unstable after I did what you suggested. I would like to cut my losses and not continue, but also not be charged, since my issue was not solve. Thank you for your help.

It sounds like your hard drive is about to die.
You should consider replacing it.
