Customer Question

I am trying to re-load Microsoft Office 97 on my new PC so I can continue to use a database of 900 items in Works but I can't get past the Workgroups thing. There are no instructions for it. What the .... are you supposed to do? Whatever I key in it says it can't proceed or load the software without my name, PIN and path. How do I know what these are? Also it says there are empty fields but they are not! Grrr. I have been up all night trying to do this 21.00 yesterday!

Hi there and welcome

To clarify, you are trying to install Office 97, and it is asking for your name pin and path during installation?

Is this correct? Or is Works (which version?) asking for this during installation?

Thank you
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

OK. I don't know. If I could see behind this screen it might be open but I am not used to Windows 8 yet and don't know how to do that. There is a Workgroups Installer and it says it has to have the address of the workgroup before it can install the software. I have made lots of attempts and managed to get it loaded but then can't open it without the Workgroup Installer.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
Correct Hilary

But again, is this Office 97 or Works you are referring to?

And where did you get the install from as it appears to be a company install for a specific network

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Again - I don't know! The install is my original purchased CD for Microsoft Office 97 which cost £39 and for which I have the product key on the back of the CD case. It has several programs in it: Powerpoint, Outlook, Word, Access and Excel. Oh! Then it's not Works! I have got muddled as I was investigating using either Works or Access whichever I could get. I have been up for 48 hours (i.e 2 nights with no sleep as the previous 24 hours I was trying to transfer iTunes library) It's all such a nightmare. I just need to get my database working.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
No problem Hilary and thanks (I understand, I have been there :)

Do the following please

Download revo uninstaller from the below link

www.revouninstaller.com

Run it and use it to uninstall and remove all references to Office.

Restart the computer and attempt the installation again

If it fails, please let me know

thank you
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

OK thanks but I have Office (2010?) on my new PC wiith Windows 8 on. Will it wipe that too?

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
Only if you tell it to (only tell it to remove office 97)

But why are you installing 97 if you already have 2010?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Oh OK! I have a database of 900 items on my old PC. I can transfer the contents but it won't open so I was trying to load Works or Access to open it in. I presume there is nothing it will work with in Windows 8? Nor even a database program to re-key it in with?

I can remove the Office 97 program but how do I know what else is associated with it?

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
Nothing is Hilary

Access 2010 should open the file. Can you upload it to www.wikisend.com

Give me the download link it gives you after uploading and I can open and make sure it is ok for 2010?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Er that's a website? How do I upload to a website? Sorry for being thick.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
its ok,

Go to the website www.wikisend.com

Click Choose File, choose your database than click Upload

It will give you a download link when it finishes

Please give me that download link

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

ok

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX to give me the Download link
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Ok. The downlload link it gave me is http://wikisend.com/download/120686/libdb

It is in mdb format but I have also converted it to wdb.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
Thanks Hilary

this is your file that will work in Access 2010

http://wikisend.com/download/136588/Libdbase.accdb

And here is an Excel file with your contacts

http://wikisend.com/download/144568/JA-Contacts.xlsx

If you have any difficulties, please let me know

And please remember to Rate MY Service

Thank you

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

OK. Thankyou. Do I have Access 2010 in Windows 8? I can't find i. Is it an app. I can't afford to download a new copy so would rather use the old version from the CD I already have rather than spend even more.

What are the contacts for?

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
It comes as part of Office 2010 (which you indicated you installed)

But you would need to purchase it, you use the version on your CD (there is no need for Works)

I though they were contacts, I just copied out all your data in the database and put it in Excel so it is easier to read.

Feel free to ask if you would like more information

and please remember to Rate My Service

Thank you

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I have downloaded the 136588/lbdbase.accdb but cannot open it. Microsoft Office on Windows 8 does not have Access - or at least I can't find it anywhere. It opened it in Microsoft Office but it was only a picture of a folder and not the contents.

I could not download the contacts one. (It is a Library Database of references by the way).

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
ok, than you got Office and not Office Professional (which includes Access)

you can download the Office Professional Trial here

(free for 60 days)

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try

Remember you want Office Professional

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

£300 ?????!!!!!!! You are joking! I can't afford that for a library database when I have a CD sitting on my desk that should do the job! Can we not get round this Workgroup Administrator thing on Office 97?

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
No sorry Hilary

the CD you have is for a network installation of Office, not for a single PC installation.

It sits on a Server and is installed there, it wont work via the method you are doing, and I am keen to know where you got the disk for?

Can I maybe just put the data into a text document so you can read without needing Access?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

The CD I have was for my home PC many years ago. I have never had a network although it was capable of being networked and had a network cable.

A text document is no good to me. When books go into the library I give them a catalogue entry in the database and can produce various reports e.g. in author order. When books go missing I can keep them in the catalogue listing and suppress them from the author list by 'marking' them.

Is it not possible to download Works? I think I was using version 7.0.?

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
Works can be downloaded here

http://downloads.info/windows/office/office-suites/microsoft-works.html

I still wasnt clear if you did my very first instructions? as this would eliminate your computer being the problem, and confirm this is a network installation

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Yes I did download the revoinstaller and it got rid of the workgroup admininstrator thing and Office 97.

Sorry for delay I downloaded the Works software you recommended but it was very slow and Norton also fended off a dangerous app that came with it. It is not working properly and it says it is not designed to run on my computer so I have deleted it (or as much as I can find of it).

I was originally using Works 7.0. Is this not available?

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
yes it is, but you have to purchase it ($26)

From here

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Works-7-0-Old-Version/dp/B000069IL6

Is office now installing?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I tried to stop Office installing and delete it but I don't know if there are related files all over the place now. How can I get rid of it?

Will the Works 7.0 run on my computer?

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
Works 7 will run

revo uninstaller will remove any files from office. If it does not list any, than they are gone from your computer.

Feel free Hilary to ask if you would like more information

And please do not forget to Rate My Service

Thank you

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

OK - if you are sure it will run I will order Works 7.0.

I will try and have another clean-up with the revoinstaller.

Thank you for your help. What a nightmare it all is!

I will do a rating for you (and pay) when successful and we can close the matter.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
It will run,

I can understand! Let me know how it goes please Hilary

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Oh here we go - the Amazon supplier you gave me for Works 7.0 won't supply one item on its own.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
ok, that is strange of them

But can you try here please

http://www.go2getdeals.com/show_detail.php?item_id=13
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

can't see it there.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.

I double check and it appears straight away

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Expert:  Richard replied 1 year ago.
