In the past I noticed that turning the hosted accounts into forward only, was the quickest way to get the emails on to gmail. However that left me not being able to send an email with the correct senders address on it. Can you make that work? Is that an alias?

It should be configured as an alias, you'll need to choose the "from" field, it's actually more of a "send as" regardless.
