I have a list of people in one column and their gender in another - in excel

i need to calculate at the bottom the total of M and the total of F

Hi, welcome and thank you for your question. My name is Jess and I am glad to assist you today.

Since the list of people is in ONE column and so with their corresponding gender, you need to have a cell in the buttom that will add ALL of the M and all of the F. That is, there will be 2 rows like this:

Total Male: {formula}
Total Female: {formula}

Now, the formula to use is COUNTIF. It will count the cell that meets the criteria. If the column for your Gender is B, at the bottom you can have this formula:

Total Male: =COUNTIF(B1:B8,"M")

Here, B1:B8 is a sample range. You can make is B1:B1000 delending on your actual data.

For the Female, here is the formula:
Total Female =COUNTIF(B1:B8,"F")

Now, the formula means COUNT the cells in the range (B1:B8, or any range for that matter) if the content of the cell is F or M, depending on the gender contained in the cell.
