Customer Question

Anything for me yet on my question below? I hate having to pay for rush service with no replies after 12 hours.

I have a manual that I'm working on that is divided into documents by subsection (i.e., I-1, I-2, II-1, II-2, etc.).

I'm trying to create a TOFC that picks up the subsection page numbering which is I-1.1, I-1.2, II-1.1, II-1.2, etc.).

In my TOFC file, I'm using the following codes:

{TOC \S CHAPTER \ROMAN \D "–1."} { RD "Sec%20I-1.doc" } {RD "Sec%20I-2.doc" } {RD "Sec%20II-1.doc"}{RD "Sec%20II-2.doc"} etc.

Then in the actual files, I use this code:

{SEQ chapter} to get each chapter start to pick up the correct Section identifier.

It works for the first Section, here's what I get:

OVERVIEW OF COMPLIANCE EXAMINATIONS 1–1.1

INTRODUCTION 1–1.1

EXAMINATION APPROACH 1–1.1

DETERMINING RISK 1–1.1

EVALUATING THE COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM 1–1.1

APPLICABILITY AND ADAPTABILITY TO LARGE AND SMALL INSTITUTIONS 1–1.2

ROLE OF THE COMPLIANCE EXAMINER 1–1.2

OVERVIEW OF THE EXAMINATION PROCESS 1–1.2

PRE-EXAMINATION PLANNING 1–1.2

REVIEW AND ANALYSIS 1–1.3

COMMUNICATING FINDINGS 1–1.3

REFERENCES 1–1.3

But then for the second Section and all subsequent sections I get a 0 for the section number:

COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM 0–1.1

INTRODUCTION 0–1.1

COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM 0–1.1

BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND MANAGEMENT OVERSIGHT 0–1.1

COMPLIANCE PROGRAM 0–1.2

Policies and Procedures 0–1.3

Training 0–1.3

Monitoring 0–1.3

Consumer Complaint Response 0–1.4

COMPLIANCE AUDIT 0–1.4

REFERENCES 0–1.4

What am I doing wrong?

I would really like my question answered or I wouldn't have posted it. BUT since it's taking so long, I'm not feeling confident that anyone will be able to answer. Is there another forum that can help me?

Expert:  cpugeek replied 12 months ago.

Hi,

I'd be happy to assist you.

Would it be possible for you to provide me with some sample files so I can look at the construction of your documents? Your explanation is very good, but it's sometimes easier to resolve issues of this type by looking at the embedded codes, etc., in the source files themselves.

If you can share the files, please use the "upload file" function at http://www.wikisend.com, and then post the file download link back here. You are also free to use any other location of your choice which I might be able to access with a link you provide.

Thank you very much, and I'll look forward to hearing back from you.

I'll take a look and reply back to you as quickly as possible.

thank you

Expert:  cpugeek replied 12 months ago.

Hi,

I'm looking at the documents and I think the issue is that it's breaking on the headings, such that, continuation of the section number is XXXXX impeded somehow.

I am so far unable to locate the specific combination of field code options that can fix it, and am also experiencing some unusual behavior with the file linking between the ToC and the other 3 files (it throws an error about every third attempt at opening the ToC).

I can still continue to look at it if you like, or I can opt out and let someone else take over who may be able to assist you?

Thank you.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

Whatever you think. I just need an answer. Maybe there is a way that I can make the page numbers in each document pick up this type of outline level so that the TOFC will pick up the correct page numbering? Please let me know if that is do-able.

Expert:  cpugeek replied 12 months ago.

Hi, thank you for your patience and the reply.

I believe you can pick up the page numbers in the way that you've described, but I haven't tested that.
I'll do that shortly, while I continue to look at the other issue. I'll be back in touch as soon as I can. The more I look at this the more it appears to be related to the pagination (separate documents for the sections being referenced with RD).
We should be able to force the Reference Documents to include a starting page number (assuming that you're going to start a section on a new page rather than as a continuation on an existing page).
If I don't have a resolution for you within the next 2 hours, I'll find another expert to take over from me so that you can continue to get the service you need.
Thank you again.

Hello,

I honestly cannot get this to work across multiple documents, and have tried everything I can think of, from altering the page numbers, SEQ entries, page field codes, TOC field codes, RD codes, etc.
What has worked, though it can be a bit tedious, is combining the 3 separate documents into 1, and then creating section breaks in each new area; within the section break add page numbering which starts anew with "1".
Is combining the 3 (or more documents) into 1, and using section breaks and section numbering a possibility?
Thank you.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

No, not an option as my client needs them in separate documents. Is there any way to format the page numbers with outline levels so they appear in format indicated in my files?

Expert:  cpugeek replied 12 months ago.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

It should be possible to use outline levels, but I was unable to get it to work earlier.

I'll make another attempt but, in the meantime, I'm going to opt out as I don't want to prevent another expert from taking over should one have the solution at hand for you.

Thank you very much for your patience, and I'll follow up either directly through this page, or through the next expert, if I am able to resolve this for you and the question is still open.

Sincerely.
