When I open Streets and trips, I get a message"registry settings

Resolved Question:

When I open Streets and trips, I get a message"registry settings for this application were not copied correctly. To correct these settings, run setup again for this application from the location where you installed it. I reinstalled from my installation disk and I still get the same message. What now?

Hello and thanks for choosing Just Answer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX X'll be happy to assist you.

Did this problem just start or is this the first time you are trying to use Streets and Trips? Are you using Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

Just started, I believe it was caused when I ran Iola system Mechanic

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

OK are you using Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

7

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

Alright in that case the first thing we are going to try is a System Restore to a point before IOLA System Mechanic was installed. Let me know if you have already done this. This is the easiest way to fix this problem, but it doesn't always work so please let me know if it doesn't work for you!

  1. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
  2. Click Next on the first window.
  3. Click the box for Show More Restore Points so that all points are displayed.
  4. Pick a restore point from before you ran System Mechanic.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Finish and wait for the restore to complete (the system will reboot).

When the computer comes back up please try Streets and Trips again. Then please come back to www.justanswer.com and click on My Stuff -> My Questions to let me know how it turned out.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

I picked an early june restore point and my computer is still working on restoring the registry

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

OK keep me posted. It usually takes about 20 minutes if we go back further than a week.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

Starting Windows now....What do you think of System Mechanic?

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

Honestly, I don't use or recommend the use of any of those type of programs. I don't trust them (mostly because of problems like these). No computer I have ever serviced has been slow due to registry errors, etc.

Truthfully I just run Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.windows.com/mse) as my antivirus/antimalware program (its free) and that's about it. If you find that your computer is operating slower than you like, you can check out the Startup folder (Start -> All programs -> Startup) and remove anything you don't actually use. In addtion you can use the Programs and Features applet (in Control Panel) to remove old programs you are not really using.

Hopefully the system restore fixes us up, let me know if not!

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

Same message with Streets and Trips, should I go to an earlier restore? I believe it was about a month ago when I installed it.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

A month ago when you installed System Mechanic? Yes I would recommend trying a restore point from before then.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

I would have gone back farther but I couldn't get it to give me an earlier date. I will try again.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

OK if there isn't an earlier one (there may not be) let me know and we will try some different fixes. Thanks!

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

I am certain that there are more points, but how do I get there? When I click on show more restore it does not go farther back.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

There may not be more points. Windows only saves so many of them so as not to take up too much room on your computer. If you are clicking Show More Restore Points and you are not seeing anything listed in May then they just are not there. Are you click the back arrow next to the word June to go back to May?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

The page says scan for affected programs, but that didn't seem to help. I can't see any way to get back earlier than June 8. When I click next, it takes me back to the first page.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

OK no worries; let's try this another way. Please do the following for me:

  1. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard. Press the R key to open the Run window.
  2. In the Run window, type appwiz.cpl and click OK. This will open the Programs and Features window.
  3. Scroll down to the Microsoft Streets and Trips entry, highlight it, and click Uninstall.
  4. Complete the uninstall wizard.
  5. Repeat step 1 to open the Run window again.
  6. Type regedit and click OK.
  7. Click yes on the prompt.
  8. In the Registry, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft.
  9. Look under Microsoft for the Streets and Trips folder. Right click it and choose Export.
  10. Save the Export wherever you want.
  11. Right click the folder again and choose Delete.
  12. Close Registry Editor.

After doing all that, insert the Streets and Trips CD and start the install again. On the third page of the wizard, in the Install To box, delete the and Trips portion of the line, then click Next. Complete the wizard and try Streets and Trips.

Let me know what happens! Thanks.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

I don't see streets and trips on the list under microsoft.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

OK the removal may have gotten rid of it (that's a good thin). Go ahead and proceed with the reinstall of Streets and Trips, but please note that on the third page of the installation you need to change the Install To path. I usually just delete the and Trips part of the path and then click Next.

Let me know how it goes!

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

I reinstalled. Same message about bregistry settings.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

And you changed the path? If you right click the Streets and Trips icon and choose Run as administrator does it open properly?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

I deleted the & streets on the third page. I do not get a run as administrator choice when I right click the icon.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

I apologize for the delay. Please do this:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the Search box, type streets.exe and wait the file to appear in the Start Menu.
  3. Right click it and choose Properties.
  4. Click the Compatibility tab.
  5. Check the Run this program as Administrator box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Now start Streets and Trips, any change?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

Windows has just started installing an update and tells me not to power of. Sorry, Just a minute.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

No worries I will be here!

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

Can I work with you on a case by case basis? I am looking for someone good to help when I have problems. I think I am pretty good with computers, but in todays climate I would like to work with someone that I can trust.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

when I search streets.exe, I get the same registry settings message.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

OK did you right click it and choose Properties? If so you should see a screen like this:

graphic

Click the Compatibility tab and then click the Run this program as administrator box. Click OK, then start Streets and Trips.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

It says activate now, enter your product key over the internet or by phone. I have the key. What next?

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

Go ahead and enter the key and then activate over the Internet. Let me know if it won't activate.

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

It tells me to buy it or get a free trial

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

Is there no place to enter your product key?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

When I closed that screen, the program was open under it. It works....Why?

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

There is something corrupted in your user profile (probably by System Mechanic). This corruption is preventing Streets and Trips from starting properly. When you run a program as administrator it basically bypasses your user profile and runs the program under the administrator profile.

You have a couple of choices here.

  1. Create a new user on your computer and run Streets and Trips under that user only. This option can be a bit cumbersome as you will have to logout as yourself and then login as the other user every time you want to use Streets and Trips.
  2. Create a new user on your computer and copy all of your data from the old user account to the new one. This is the most intricate fix as it requires you to move all of your stuff from one user account to another. This should fix the problem, but it is time consuming.
  3. Just continue to run Streets and Trips as administrator. It will continue to work properly. This is the easiest of the fixes as you have already set the program to operate in this fashion.

Let me know which way you are leaning. I can provide instructions on creating a new user account for yourself if you wish to go with option 1 or 2. Thanks!

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

It is allowing me to open it from the Icon. I am restarting to see if it will continue to work after a restart. I may have another problem, are you interested. It is unusual, I can't open a new Quicken program that I just bought.

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

Certainly. Just let me know after your reboot what error you are getting when you open the Quicken program. Streets and Trips should continue to operate normally under the Run As Administrator mode, which we have checked the box for. Thanks!

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

Streets runs fine when I click the Icon. I can run other programs also. It does ask me if I want to allow the program to make changes to my computer after I click to open icon. I say yes and it opens.

I do get an error message that says unable to start the bluetooth stack service on startup. I don't think that I use that

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

No the Bluetooth Stack is only used to pair your computer with Bluetooth devices. If you are not using any Bluetooth Devices then this will not affect you. You can remove the Bluetooth error by removing it from startup:

  1. Hold down the Windows key and press the R key to open the Run window.
  2. Type msconfig and click OK. This will open the System Configuration utility.
  3. Click on the Startup tab.
  4. Look through the list for the Bluetooth program. It may not be immediately evident which one it is, but it should have the letters BT in it at least.
  5. When found, clear that checkbox.
  6. Click OK and then restart.
  7. When the computer comes back up, close the System Configuration warning and make sure the Bluetooth error doesn't come back.

As for the 'Allow Changes' prompt, that is normal when running a program as administrator in Windows 7. You can continue to just click Yes with no harm.

I think that should take care of everything on this particular question, but please let me know if you need any further clarification or if you have trouble using the System Configuration utility. You can do so by using the Continue Conversation link.

Also please let me know if you want to work on the Quicken problem by opening an additional question. I unfortunately have to log off for this evening (it's 11:30PM ET) but will be back first thing in the morning.

Thanks so much!

Customer: replied 12 months ago.

Thanks, I will contact you tomorrow about the Quicken Problem. When I run setup, it starts installation but never completes.

Do you think running System Mechanic could have caused these problems?

Expert:  Erik B replied 12 months ago.

I will look forward to your question!

Yes I think System Mechanic may have contributed to these issues. One thing to try with the Quicken install is to right click the installation program and choose Run as administrator. It may go through that way, but let me know if not!

Thanks again!
