Customer Question

Microsoft Word: I have a document consisting of several sections, and a Table of Contents at the top. I want the table of contents to show the within-document page number, but it is showing the within-section page number (that is, starting at 1 for each section). The simple page number appears in the status bar at the bottom when the document is open. How can I get that to appear in the table of contents?

Hi, thank you for using JustAnswer.com. I am glad to assist you today.

If the document contains no sensitive data, can you send it to me? If you can, please upload the document in this website:

http://wikisend.com

In that page, upload the document, then you shall get a File ID. Then post the File ID when you reply so that I can download the file that you uploaded.

Keep me posted.

Hi Jess,

I uploaded the file to: http://wikisend.com/download/144046/redactedTOC.docx

If I created a new document containing several sections, I can put in a table of contents and it acts just like I want it to. So there is something with the documents I am assembling that re-starts numbering at page 1. Hope you can tell me how to eliminate that.

The original documents that I'm putting into one big document have different formatting, so there have to be section breaks.

Hi, I am sorry for this late reply. I got your document. Are you referring to the line that says something like: Page 1 of 1?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
At the top of the document is a table of contents. Every item of the table of contents is page 1. That is what I do not want.
Expert:  Jess M. replied 2 years ago.
Hi,

I examined the layout of the draft document that you gave me. I found out that the document was divided into independent sections causing the pages to appear as page 1 only.

I removed the sectioning and now the pages are back to page 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Please check the revised draft on this link:

Please download and check the changes I made and see if it corrects the problem. Keep me posted.

Best regards,
Jess

I am aware that the document consists of several sections. That was stated. It was also stated that the differences in orientation/format necessitate the sectioning.

The answer was not sufficient, and the collection of XML files provided in the zip file mean nothing to me.

Expert:  Jess M. replied 2 years ago.
Were you able to download the revised file in the .DOCX format? I am referring to this link:

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
That link is a zip file of XML files. There is no docx file.
Expert:  Jess M. replied 2 years ago.
Please try clicking on that link again since I uploaded the DOCX file. I tried it myself and here is the screen shot:

When I go to open or save the file, it shows as redactedTOC.zip.

See if you will get a docx file.
Jess
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Yes, that was a docx file.

My original request remains. The document consists of multiple sections. I need the table of contents to display the within-document page numbers, not start over at 1 for each section. Alternatively, take out the section breaks if there is some way to maintain the different formatting/orientation of the contributing sections.

Expert:  Jess M. replied 2 years ago.
Are the pages in the TOC still incorrect? The TOC in that file shows 2, 3, and 4. Is that correct? If not, what should be the exact page numbers?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Yes, the page numbers in that table of contents are correct. But it was done by deleting the section breaks and that destroys the mix of portrait and landscape orientations.
Expert:  Jess M. replied 2 years ago.
Ok. I will try to redo the page layout of the second page into Portrait that will not affect the page numbering.

I will post the modified docx file then.

I am still awaiting the promised modified docx file. -- John

Hi John,

Is it a requirement that the second page is of another page orientation than the rest of the document?

I am sorry but I have tried to redo the layout and I cannot make the pages consistent if there is a different page orientation in the document since it will revert to Page 1 after each page orientation changes.

Let me now opt out so that other experts can help you further.

Thank you for using JustAnswer.

Yes, some sections will have differing page orientation. That is a requirement. -- John
