2000 mercury mountaineer 5.0 massive gas burning . all 8 plugs sutty . new plugs.fuel pump 60 psi at rail returnless. grounds to injectors is there.volts to every thing..fuel p. inj.(8) seem to be getting what the alternater is doin.
JA: Has the vehicle turned into a gas hog? And how does it start -- same as usual?
Customer: starts fine.burns 5 gallons in 30 min.is 60-65 psi on rail ok/
JA: Are you fixing your Mountaineer yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: have a 2000 for parts.crashed in rear end.changed exhaust.tps.maf. coils.plugs. f.sender(new) pletumn gasket.checking resis. on injectors ok at 14.5 olhms. did find oil pan oil temp.and level sensor wires burned. cut back for now
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: its my daughters and walked up to it blind. raw gas and soot and flames where comeing out the exhaust

Hi, Name is***** am pretty sure the fuel pressure regulator at the back of the intake is bad. Fuel pressure for this engine is only 35 to 45 max. It will also have a vacuum line connected to top of it that if diaphragm is leaking will flood engine through the vacuum line. Check to see if oil is overfull. It may be full of gas. Need to replace regulator and change oil and filter.

You are correct on this one is the first year they started to put the return less system. Have you checked to see if the oil is contaminated with fuel?

If you are getting closed loop then you have hooked up a scanner to see it. If you are running that rich to blow flames out of tail pipe then you should have codes in the PCM for rich or something else major. The codes will be needed to help with diagnosis.

The injectors do get battery voltage at one wire and the computer controls the ground on the other wire.

You say the engine runs good but blows flames out the back? My 1998 5.0 explorer only got 12mpg in city no matter what i did.

Just because the noid light flashes is telling you the computer is not shorted. It does not tell you if the injector is getting too much fuel pressure or is stuck open flooding engine.

The computer controls fuel pressure to injectors depending on load. If the computer cannot control pressure ant it is too high will flood the engine. What codes do you get?
