It has a new battery and a new alternator. But the car won't

Customer Question

It has a new battery and a new alternator. But the car won't start now and sometimes the interior lights, headlights, etc. won't come on. What is likely the problem? For 2 months or so, It has been difficult to start (barely cranking at first) before I got a new battery. Now it won't start at all.
JA: Have you checked the vehicle's manual for this?
Customer: Anyone there?
JA: What is the model/year of your Mercury?
Customer: 1996 Mercury Sable wagon, 3.0 liter, (OHV I think...)
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Replaced battery, installed new alternator, changed mega fuse, did the usual things like make sure fuses and leads were pressed in tight. It did start first time (after I installed the alternator--but sometimes it has done that before even during times when sometimes it would barely crank at first). Now it doesn't crank at all
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: Anyone there?

Hi, welcome to Just Answer. I'm Ron and I will be helping you today.

This can be 2 different issues, first check your battery cables at both ends for tightness and corrosion.

If that's good, then check your starter motor for excessive draw.

Thanks, Ron
