I have grand marquis 2003 with rear fixed differential

Customer Question

hii have grand marquis 2003 with rear fixed differential whining sound started from 20 mphthe sound from long time with no change (car purchased with this sound), i opened rear diff cover for inspection and bearing replacementi found all bearing (pinion and carrier and axle) with good condition, and before replacing bearing i checked backlashand it was 30 thou which i think too much for gears question is what can make backlash so high like that with original factory shims and good bearing and gears teeth.??also after bearing replacement with new crush sleeve the backlash remain the same 30 thou.

whenever you replace the bearings you need to measure both the pinion and side carrier back lash. Chances are the back lash wasn't correct to begin with from the factory.

it order to not repeat the cycle, both pinion depth and side carrier measurements need to be adjusted
