Have 2000 mercury cougar (202,000 miles V6)with alt light

Customer Question

have 2000 mercury cougar (202,000 miles V6)with alt light on. Owned it since 50,000 miles. Came on all of a sudden as I parked the car. Alternator replaced and field excitation wire repaired 2 years ago (only 6000 miles ago) Field excitation wire pulled out of repair joint but after redoing with new crimp connect problem is still thre. F2 fuse OK. I am frustrated with the alt on this car as I think I have replace it 4 times during owner ship.
Don't even know where to start now.

Welcome, I am Chris (aka-Moose)

What brand alternator is on the vehicle now?

Do you have a volt meter to do some testing and to see what the battery voltage is at?

It's a reman from autozone.
I have a voltmeter.
The alternator is hardly reachable.
Its 10:30 and I hope to work on it tomorrow early evening or Sat morning.

I see the battery is 6 years old now but shows 12.55 volts. Could it be as simple as the battery failed instantly. However when starting and running the voltage starts to drop so I know the alt is not putting out.

Thanks, ***** ***** the tests we need to follow to check the alternator/generator. Be aware some of the readings may not match exact being its a aftermarket alternator. I have had very poor luck from aftermarket alternators and starters on Ford vehicles.

I hear from many that work PCs have a security system which blocks links from opening. Do you have another computer with different AV and firewalls?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Next connect with you tomorrow or next day I will use home PC.
Good night for now.

Hello again, I am sorry you were not pleased with my help.

I hate that you paid to get an answer but left, what appears to me, not satisfied.

Just so you know I am still here and available to help any day. We can start over fresh or just pick up where we left off.

Chris
