Customer Question

Hi Chris, my name is Teresa. I have a 2004 mercury Monterey van with 86000+ miles. I started experiencing this problem: When I turn on my van and try to shift from park, I struggle moving the needle. I have the brakes on and move the steering wheel back and forth to get the needle to move. What could be the problem?

So you are saying it is stuck in park?

Will it release from park using the emergency release?

Do the brake lights illuminate each time the brake pedal is pressed, testing it about 10 times?

it will stick in park after several attempts to move the needle. I don't use the emergency brake and I do have brake lights when pressing the brake pedal in order to shift

On the shifter base is an emergency release, have you ever tried that to get it out of park?

Are you going to be doing the diag and repair yourself?
