2001 Mercury sable air bag light on after dragging the front bumper skirt over a parking curb in reverse. how to fix it with out tripping the bags?

I am sorry that you have not been helped yet. I just came online and saw your question.
It is pretty basic on this Mercury. Disconnect the battery cables and isolate them away from the battery terminals so that they cannot accidently touch them. Now wait 3 minutes before starting any work around the airbags systems. That is it.

thank you for your response Eric. ok so what do I do to the sensor under the bumper cover? is there more than one?

HI,

There is only one crash sensor. It is located at top of the bumper reinforcement bar towards passenger side- see diagram I have attached

Check the wiring harness and connector to make sure connector is tight and that no wiring is torn. Repair wiring as needed. If ok, then replace the crash sensor
