I have a 2005 Mercury Sable Wagon with power windows. They are working only on occassion...sometimes when we would slam the doors the windows would work again. Now the windows are down and no amount of slamming is getting them to go back up (or down). The doors still lock and unlock, everything else works fine in the car. Any ideas?
Hi, I’m Chris. Welcome and thanks for asking your question!
Are all the windows inop from all switches?
Yep. We undid the child lock...have hit every switch at every window and nothing.
Okay, we need to get the drivers door switch out to check and verify power and ground. Do you know how to do this and do you own the tools to check this, if not let me know and I will explain it and tell you what you need.
We don't know how to do this. Right now we have a philips screwdriver and a flathead screwdriver- we are on vacation so don't have a toolbox available.
Since you do not have the tools needed, would you rather have a shop repair this or buy the tools your going to need and start electrical diagnosing?
how much do I need- just a voltmeter/ammeter? I'd like to have some idea if it is wiring or the part itself so I can see how much effort is needed to fix it. I can put in a little time on it tomorrow but probably not more than 4hrs or so.
If you give me a list of the tools I need I will get them at Walmart or Autozone tomorrow AM.
Michael you will need a volt meter or test light. Both from Auto Zone will be 10$ or 29$. You then need to remove the drivers door switch which means removing the door trim panel, shown below.

Next you need to do 4 tests, shown below.

I feel you are going to find this to be a wiring issue where as the connector to the switch is not seated firmly or the wire pins are loose in the connector or the wires are broken in the door jam.
Let me know the outcome or if you get stuck, so I can help more.
Ended up taking it in...wires were broken in the door jamb. Thanks.
Glad I could help, I figured that is where you find the fault since you said it clears up with slamming the door. Please do not forget to rate my response so my answer is given a grade.
