Mercury Grand Marquis LS: Info on changing upper & lower ball

Customer Question

Info on changing upper & lower ball joint and idler arm for 99 Gr Marquis LS (car)

I recently moved to a new city and I recently began to notice a vibration in the from of my car when slowing the car quickly. I took my car to a republe local auto repair chain. The svc advisor said that my rotors need to be machined and I need a lower and upper ball joint and idler arm.

Please provide detail info on how to replace the upper and lower ball joint and idler arm. How long should it take an above average shade tree mechanic/diyer? How long should it take the average pro mechanic in a properly equipped commercial shop? Provide any other info that would be helpful for me an ambition diyer.

I am looking at getting Moog parts from Rock Auto.

Thanks for trusting us with your problem. I have trained in the automotive field and currently work as a shop foreman. I will be helping you today.

For a pro to get it done your looking at atleast 1-2 hours max. For someone who has never done the job probably a few hours.

I have loaded the steps to get the job done.

You can rent the special tools for free from auto zone.

You will need a front end wheel alignment. This will cost around 100.00 after the repairs have been finished.

Which part should be replaced 1st, 2nd, etc? Should I consider other repairs while I am doing this? Any brand for the parts from RockAuto.com or is brand significant?

Do the lower than the upper last do the idiler arm.

You can get any brand. I normally go with OEM from online parts house that sells dealer parts at a discount. But if your short on cash any will work. Even the less expensive brands will do just fine for a great deal of time. Much better than the worn out faulty ones. Hope this helps!

Your very welcome!

I just look at the instructions that states to raise the vehicle with a hoist and then use a jack stand to...

Ball Joint: Service and RepairBall Joint, UpperRemoval1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.3. Support the suspension lower arm with a jack stand.4.

Can this complete repair be done with jack stands and a hydrolic jack &/or concrete blocks.

Hoist just means lift/jack correct? A rack is not needed correct?

Is a control arm the same as a idle arm and control arm?

How many of each part am I going to need to purchase:

2 upper & 2 lower ball joints and 2 idle arms?

Will I need any special tools for this?

I will give you a bonus if you answer above and send me a link for replacing the rotors and brake pads for the front and rear.

Thanks much!!

Your best bet is to go with this CLICK HERE This comes with every little piece for both sides for one low price.

You will want a puller to get the ball joints out. All of the special tools are listed on the steps. You can rent them for free from you local auto zone.

They have upper and lower control arms. This is the entire arm with the joint attached. You can actually order them complete which is more expensive.

Yes you can do this with just the jack and stands without a problem. The steps are from pro guide so they assume you have a rack.

Steps:

Front brake pads

Front rotor

Rear brake pads

Rear rotor

The links in your prior post for front and rear brake rotors do not work. I get a message that the links are not valid.

They only last 7 days.

Do you only need the rotor steps?
