my daughters 2000 mercury cougar sometimes will not start. i sounds like the starter is spinning , a high pitched whine, but not engaging the fly wheel and cranking the engine. i doesnt do this all the time,but when it does it will eventually start for her.

Hello and welcome to Justanswer,My name is XXXXX XXXXX X am here to assist you with your question.In most case if the starter is spinning and it dosnt engage your eaither looking at a bad starter or the flywheel is missing some teeth and it can do catch. I would start with removing the starter and doing a inspection of the flywheel to be sure all the teeth are in place and if so suspect the stater is bad (bad bendix) and needs to be replaced.
