Customer Question

An independent mercedes repair shop told me that misfire is occurring in one or two cylinders of my 1999 sl500 with 129,000 miles, and that the intake manifold should be replaced.
JA: How many miles are on the car? Is it a steady misfire? Or random?
Customer: 129,000 miles. I don't drive it hard, so it doesn't seem like it the engine is losing a noticeable amount of power. Also, it starts promptly and idles pretty smoothly.
JA: Are you fixing your SL500 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: No I'm not. I took the car in for another problem, and the shop advised me of the misfiring too.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: The plugs are original.

Is your check engine light on? Did the shop provide an explanation as to why they wanted to replace the intake manifold?
