Customer Question

I have a 1982 380 SL that is leaking antifreeze from the rear of the engine and it appears to be on the right side. On a lift there appears to be an orifice that is the source of the leak. any solutions?
JA: How old are the hoses? And have you tested the actual mix of your coolant?
Customer: The hoses are fine, unless of course something came undone.
JA: Are you fixing your SL yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Will try to repair myself unless the engine needs to be moved.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: It leaks badly, not just a drip anymore.

Hi, my name is***** you upload some photos of what you are seeing?

I would have to go back to the garage where I had it on the hoist and that can't be done until at earliest next week. The car is not at my home, but in a heated building I own several miles away. The leak is bad enough that I need to trailer it back to the garage. Finding a trailer in the north woods of Wisconsin can take some time.

It's hard to determine from your description where the leak is. It sounds to me as though the leak may be coming from a drain hole in the block. If that is the case I would suspect a leak from one of the heater hoses at the back of the engine. I think the leak may be pooling in the valley of the block and draining out. The best thing to do is pressure test the cooling system. The leak may be more evident under pressure.

If you can send me a picture it would help.
