Customer Question

2013 sprinter. Def light came on at end of day. Filled it the next day. Drove it . Parked it. Following morning wont start..
JA: Just to clarify, what are the exact lights you're talking about?
Customer: The DEF light
JA: Are you fixing your Sprinter yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes. I'd like to fix it myself. I replaced the starter relay.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: power is fine, just wont turn over. starter is fine though.

Hello and welcome to Justanswer!

If the DEF warning was ignored for long enough then it coudl cause a no start but that doesn't seem to be the case. The problem may not be related to the DEF warning.

Do you have a scan tool to see if the engine controller will communicate, and if so what codes are stored?

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
I do not have a scan tool.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 9 days ago.

There isn't a great chance of being able to diagnose and repair the issue without test equipment.

Do you hear no noise from the engine compartment when trying to start the engine?

Was it actually counting down to a forced no start from the DEF issue?

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
Employee was driving the van. He said he didn't see anything, but he wasn't looking for it either. Restart are at 0. Ignition at position 2 you can hear bells, noises like it is priming everything to start. Turn key to start, no noise. I have constant power to starter. None to solenoid when trying to start.. replaced starter relay. Same issue.

Battery fully charged.

I even jumped the starter and it worked but would not start
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 9 days ago.

If it was driven to the point that it said zero restarts then the problem was ignored for quite some time. A scan tool is going to be necessary to clear fault codes and allow the engine running if a battery disconnect doesn't do it.

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
Would anyone have that code clearing ability or just Mercedes?
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 9 days ago.

A high end aftermarket scan tool may have the ability but it depends on the specific equipment used.

Customer: replied 9 days ago.
What should a reasonable Mercedes dealership charge to clear the code?
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 9 days ago.
They shouldn't charge more than a standard hour of diagnostic time.
