Have Mercedes Questions? Ask a Mechanic for Answers ASAP
Hi, my name is ***** *****% of the time replacing the control unit will fix the transmission problem. In order to get a better idea as to whether the transmission should be replaced the technician should remove the transmission pan and inspect the pan and filter for metal shavings. If there is little or no debris in the pan I would be comfortable in just replacing the control unit. Keep in mind that when the control unit is replaced it must have software downloaded to it in order for it to function. If the shop does not have the capability to program the new control unit you will need to take the car to the Mercedes dealer or to a qualified independent Mercedes specialist. Additionally, unless the shop is authorized to purchase theft relevant parts from Mercedes they will not sell them the control unit. Also, a used transmission will not work in this car due to the fact that the control unit will not match the vin number of the vehicle. If a used transmission is installed you will still need to purchase a new control unit.
