I am going to inspect a 1998 sl500 tomorrow. It is advertised as one owner, Australian delivered, less than 70,000km's and full service history by mb dealer. Anything in particular I should look for? Thanks.

Yes, make sure hydraulic fluid in the reservoir inside trunk is up to level. Operate top, and inspect with a flashlight on each side with top partially open for hydraulic leaks from actuators. Make sure all lights on dash come on with key and then stay off when started. Check brakes,a/c, oil leaks, shocks, and service records are important. Review repair history. During test drive, check for no shake in steering wheel and smooth but no slipping transmission, no noises or vibrations at higher speeds. Check cruise, all power options and lights, including instrument cluster. Lastly inspect for repaint work and rust. Hydraulic top leaks are common, there are 20 actuators that open and close top, dont forget to inpect the ones on each side of the trunk with it open.
Thanks Cory ... "dont forget to inspect the ones on each side of the trunk with it open". What do you mean ... with what open, the trunk or the top? Any comments on engine (eg: coolant?, oil, etc.), major service items pending? Etc?Regards, Steve
Cory, not sure if you recived my follow up query above. Regards, Steve
Hello Steve, yes I did. Somehow my PC just erased a long response.
Thanks Cory ... Then I'll wait for the follow up. Cheers, Steve
Hello Steve, Unless you are a good mechanic that knows these cars, do not buy it, without having a pre purchase inspection performed by a knowledgable Mercedes shop. This will more than pay for itself by allowing you to negotiate the price with the seller with a list of what the car needs or may need soon. Such as a leaking water pump, tires, brakes, suspension components etc. Make sure they inspect all power options and for paint and body damage or previous repairs. Have them estimate any repairs it needs now including any maintenence. You may discover, you don't even want this car after the inspection. Anyway, take care, hope it works out for you Steve. Thanks Cory

Thanks Cory ... I'll check it out but will certainly get a pre purchase inspection if I decide to go further. Thanks for your comments ... much appreciated. Regards, Steve
