My 1996 c280 Sport is running great, until it just loses power when driving down the road. It does not cut off, just no response to the accelerator. Then, I cut it off, starts right back, then runs fine, until the next time. Sometimes can go days without it happening. But now almost everyday and sometimes several times per trip.

yes, basically no power, but does not cut off.
Ok, if the motor does not actually die but it loses power I would start with a fuel pressure test. It sounds like the system may be losing fuel pressure and is starving for fuel. You might have a fuel pump going bad or perhaps a restricted fuel filter. There are a lot of possibilities for something like this and a diagnostic test will need to be performed in order to get to the bottom of it. I would recommend that a computer diagnostic scan also be performed in order to check for any fault codes that may be stored in the transmission computer. Another thought that comes to mind is that the transmission may be going into limp home mode. If that happens the transmission will remain in second gear and will not upshift. When that happens the car will lack power because the transmission won't shift but the throttle will respond just fine. Turning the car off and on will usually reset the transmission computer and allow the transmission to shift until the malfunction occurs again. Let me know if you have any questions.
