Hello and welcome to Just Answer.
hi!
It definitely sounds like there is something going on internally with your COMAND. It uses a CAN bus to communicate to other control units so if it is not talking to anything but everything else is functioning normal it's a good indicator that the issue is localized to that control unit. If something were to bring down the CAN bus then there would be a number things not working versus just the COMAND. The reason it is not shutting down is probably directly related to the same concern that it is not communicating. A control unit has to tell the COMAND that the key has been removed and the door open, it doesn't monitor that since it's primary purpose is the entertainment system and telecommunications.Sometimes the problem can be remedied with software update (at the dealer). They will need to run some tests to see if it is just a software issue of the electronics portion of the COMAND has failed in some way and needs to be replaced. Without dealer equivalent software its not something you can check yourself.
Do you know if this is usually covered under warranty?
Mercedes offers a 4 yr, 50k mileage warranty. Beyond that they offer limited warranties depending on what package the customer purchases.Sadly without having someone at the dealer to run coverage to see if it is covered there is no way to know unless it falls under that original 4yr/50k.You might need to pay a maximum of 1 hour of whatever your dealer's shop rate is, just in case it turns out to be customer pay versus warranty. If it is covered you pay nothing. If it is customer pay they will give you an estimate for the repair but will not charge you more then the originally agreed upon amount I.E. 1 hour of shop labor. Most dealers run anywhere from 110 to 140 for an hour of shop labor to diagnose.
ok. Thankfully i have the 10yr 100K mile warranty. i'll cross my fingers this is covered. putting it up for sale next month and dont want to put too much $ in it now. Thanks for the help.
Not a problem. Glad I could help.
