Prenatal exposure to alcohol is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a term that is used to describe the range of effects that can occur in an individual who was prenatally exposed to alcohol and may have lifelong implications and high societal costs. Treatment is very difficult. Most individuals with fetal alcohol syndrome benefit from multiple types of intervention (eg, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, behavior therapy, etc); the necessary interventions may change over time depending upon the number, type, and severity of fetal alcohol syndrome-associated problems.
