Greetings.

Welcome to the site.

Well, you see Depression and Anxiety are two different diagnostic entities but many times they co -exist , so in other words some people may have mixed anxiety depression. Now coming back to your question i will be mentioning below symptoms of each of these conditions and this will help you to know which of these two you are having or is that you perhaps are having mixed anxiety depression.

Core symptoms of depression to look for :-

-- low mood

-- decreased interest and pleasure in previously pleasurable activities

-- poor concentration / focus

-- low confidence

-- low energy/enthusiasm

-- low self esteem

-- negative ideas

-- social withdrawal

-- increased irritability

-- ideas of self harm

-- loss of sleep and / or appetite

-- loss of libido

-- Impaired functioning in professional, social and inter-personal domains of life

IF YOU HAVE TOP TWO SYMPTOMS MENTIONED HERE WITH OR WITHOUT OTHER SYMPTOMS. ALMOST EVERY DAY, MOST PART OF A SINGLE DAY, FOR THE PAST 2 WEEKS THEN YOU ARE SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION.

Core symptoms of Anxiety to look for--

-- Restlessness

-- Palpitation

-- Fear of loosing control or dying

-- Choking sensation

-- Hyperventilation or breathlessness

-- upset stomach with or without increased frequency or urination and defecation

-- Tightness in chest

-- Dizziness

-- Nausea / vomiting sensation

YOU NEED NOT HAVE ALL OF THESE SYMPTOMS FOR DIAGNOSIS OF ANXIETY, BUT IF YOU ARE HAVING SOME OF THESE SYMPTOMS EITHER IN EPISODES OR CONSISTENTLY FOR PAST 2 WEEKS THEN YOU MAY BE SUFFERING FROM ANXIETY.

So, this is how you may get an idea what you may be suffering from however i must recommend that you get yourself thoroughly evaluated by a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist if you find that you have symptoms mentioned above so as to confirm the diagnosis formally.

On a positive note, i must say that either of these disorders are very much manageable with the help of anti depressant/ anti anxiety medication +/- psychotherapy aka counseling , so you do not worry or panic and just go about it in a systematic manner, first identifying the symptoms from the cluster mentioned above and if at all you fit them then go to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist or at least your primary doctor and get yourself evaluated and started on the right mix of medication and therapy which will take care of your symptoms.

I hope you find this useful.

Wish you all the best.
