Hello I believe I can help you with your concern
I am so sorry that you are having this issue related to over-eating (compulsive eating or binge eating as it is called), may I ask for how long have you had this issue?
probably since 10 years
And have you every been in therapy for this issue at all?
Okay well typically the over-eating is called a maladaptive coping mechanism to help you deal with stress, anxiety, and/or depression. So the best treatment is typically in the form of therapy, more specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as this is the most evidence based therapy to treat this issue. CBT has a premise that your symptoms are caused by negative thoughts, so if we change your thought process to be more positive and objective as well, then your symptoms will lessen.
Also there are psychotropic medications (e.g. antidepressants) that can be used as well to help you with these symptoms and help lessen the desire to cope by over-eating, but if they are used they must be used in conjunction with the therapy as therapy is the only true cure for this "binge-eating"
what causes people to start binge eating can a spesific event triger it
Not necessarily, typically the cause of binge-eating is not always known, but eating food (emotional eating) can help people cope with their life stressors, such as anxiety and depression, but this is only temporary and makes things worse, which is why we call it a maladaptive coping mechanism. Same theory applies to why people who are depressed drinks excessive amounts of alcohol, even though alcohol is a depressant and makes things worse in the long-run.
The goal of CBT therapy is to create new positive coping strategies to help you deal with life's stressors, so that you will not have the desire to over-eat.
I would like to recommend a couple good treatment books as well.
thank you for your help, I will definitely consider therapy.
