Can a psychotherapist prescribe if needed any medication?
Hello, I am Rafael. Thanks for asking your question - I'm here to support you. (Information posted here is not private or confidential but public).
In the US only psychiatrist and any other medical doctor could prescribe psychiatric medication, while in some states psychologists are also allowed to prescribe medication; but other mental health professionals like counselors and psychotherapists are not allow to provide such service.
I am sorry to know about this person's suffering from depression and anxiety for this long. I agree with you, time alone has no power to rehabiltiate a person from trauma, depression, anxiety nor from any other serious mental health disorder. It is only through consistent psychological treatment that the rehabilitation process is possible, while medication could some times help relieving some of the symptoms the person may experience.
Dr. Z a colleague of mine here at JustAnswer, confirmed that psychologists in New Mexico, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and Guam, with a post-degree in psychopharmacology can prescribe these medications. Just remember that counselors, psychotherapists and clinical social workers, can provide counseling and psychotherapeutic support at different levels of expertise but cannot prescribe any medication.
