I am a 55 year old female I have been on Xanax for the past 28 years for panic and anxiety attacks. I was started out on 1mg four times a day and now take 1 mg twice a day . I would like to taper myself off of Xanax and I would like to know the safe way to do it I want to try to live without a drug controlling me for my anxiety

Greetings !

Welcome to the site.

I am Dr. Kaushik and i believe i can help you with your problem.

I am going to mention below a safe withdrawal strategy for Xanax which shall help you to come off the drug but I urge you to carry out the withdrawal under the supervision of your doctor.

-- You are taking 1 mg dose of Xanax twice a day as of now.

-- Start with 0.75 mg first dose and 1 mg second dose for 5 days.

-- Then 0.75 mg first dose and 0.75 mg second dose for 5 days.

-- Then 0.5 mg first dose and 0.75 mg second dose for 5 days.

-- Then 0.5 mg first dose and 0.5 mg second dose for 5 days.

-- Then 0.25 mg first dose and 0.5 mg second dose for 5 days.

-- Then 0.25 mg first dose and 0.25 mg second dose for 5 days.

--Then stop first dose and continue on 0.25 mg second dose for 5 days.

-- Then take 0.25 mg second dose at alternate days for 1 week.

-- Then take 0.25 mg dose once in 3 days for 10 days.

-- Stop Xanax completely.

So this withdrawal as you see is going to be extremely slow therefore your patience is required to endure it and hopefully this will ensure a safe withdrawal of yours from Xanax.

Kindly discuss this strategy with your doctor and carry out the withdrawal under his supervision.

I hope this helps.

Wish you all the best.

Please kindly leave a Positive rating if you are satisfied with the answer.
