i have been diagnosed with bipolar 1 and cyclothymia, i constantly get intrusive, jealous and paranoid thoughts about my girlfriend and her past relationships, and currently guys trying to get with her to the point were i get psyhcotic, im taking 500 mg of lamotrigine daily just now but dont feel the medication is helping with manic/hypomanic side i.e racing thoughts, impulsive spending, risky behaviour etc although it has curbed my depression, and i feel i need other meds or i believe my behaviour will spiral out of control.

Seeking expert counseling is a sign of strength. A personal relationship with a caring professional is proven clinically effective.

Elliott Sewell, LPCC, NCC :

Dear friend,

Elliott Sewell, LPCC, NCC :

Lamotrigine is used for bipolar disorder but rather than acting on the manic part of bipolar, it acts on the depressive side.. It is not supposed to increase mania, but it is not helping to control it.

Elliott Sewell, LPCC, NCC :

You need a different mood stabizer.

Elliott Sewell, LPCC, NCC :

Ask your doctor about lithium or seroquel

Elliott Sewell, LPCC, NCC :

Either of these two medications can be taken with lamotrigine. Consult with your physician.

Elliott Sewell, LPCC, NCC :

I wish you great success in controlling your mania. You NEED to change your meds.
