Can I take effexor and celexa together?

Optional Information:
What have you tried so far?: Celexa by itself and effexor by itself. Other medications but they didn't help like these. I'm on 75 mg of effexor now. I have anxiety again and no motivation

Hello,

Effexor and Celexa both acts on Serotonin neurotransmitter and are usually avoided in combination because there is a risk of Serotonin syndrome which although rare is a life threatening syndrome.

You can discuss with your doctor about adding Bupropion (Wellbutrin) instead which mainly works on Dopamine neurotransmitter. Bupropion is an activating antidepressant which is specially indicated in patients complaining of lack of motivation, fatigue, poor concentration etc. Effexor can cause sexual side effects in some patients and Bupropion can even counteract those sexual side effects.

75 mg of Effexor is a very low dose and you can also ask your doctor to increase the dose further to 150 mg per day. This should help in controlling your anxiety symptoms.

Kind regards

Vikas
