When trying to deal with a disorder (like depression) or addiction, and you know the correct answers to the problem, how do you get help? Example: You know you are depressed. Yet you know all the answers as to why you are depressed. You know what you should and should not do. But nothing seems to help, because you already know the wrong and right things to do.

It is very positive that you know the answers to those questions but therapy goes above and beyond why you are depressed. It identifies the triggers that increase your depression and sound techniques that lead to you avoiding certain situations. You can bring this information to therapy and still greatly benefit from its presence in your life. Having a professional helps you the most when you are doing the right things and you still are plagued by differences in mood. We welcome insightful clients so that we don't have to start with very basic issues. Sometimes a professional and a "stranger" can give you insight that you overlook. The answer is that having a professional will help because it can give you a new sense of direction. You can find a therapist by logging onto the American Psychological Association.
