I am being treated (for many years now) for depression. I think I drink not to feel depressed. I take antidep. meds, but.....
If you have depression and you drink for different reasons it still is not a good idea. Because alcohol is a depressant for everyone it increases whatever mood disorder is already there. Not only will it impact existing problems it is a negative way of coping with mood issues it becomes your routine way of coping with problems. This discourages the development of better coping skills that you could have if you eliminated the drinking. lastly it can increase over time and you will find yourself drinking more without really realizing that this is happening. If you suffer from a mood disorder and take medication it is not recommended that you drink. This can work against the medicine and you can begin to suffer from this interaction. Try to find other ways to address periods of mood disturbance without alcohol and ways that are available for you to gravitate to.
