Customer Question

I have spent a month on Lexapro 10mg. Before that 8 years on zoloft. 125mg. It stopped working. Tried to push dose, could not handle side effects. Sweating like a dog.

Lexapo has helped some, but my doctor says to give it full 8 weeks.

Everything I know says Lexapro is a full effect after a month.

Ideas? Depression and anxiety are really not much better. I am going throught a hard time with wife. And yes I am in in therapy.

Dr. Ed Wilfong :

Lexapro can vary in how long it takes to help. You are on very low dose. I seldom see any results at less than 20mg. Often had less side effects than Zoloft. If you are not having problems, 20 mg may be worth a try. Side effects, if any, usually only last a couple weeks. You may also have to decide between sweating and misery.

Which drug is better for anxiety zoloft or lexapro in your mind?

Dosing of zoloft for me at 125mg stopped working, Maybe I should have stayed on and upped dose?

It varies from person to person. Zoloft is sometimes more complex with more side effects. 150-200 mg is really therapeutic dosage, so you are close to that but then you get a dose dependent response where it starts affecting dopamine as well as serotonin. Lexapro is a a little "cleaner", with just serotonin and usually less trouble with discontinuation effects. Lexapro at 20mg or Zoloft at 150-200are both reasonable. Personally, I would go with Lexapro, but just preference.
BTW-how did you get into Stahl's class. I use his books as my psychpharm "bibles"
