My son is 9 years old and has been struggling with ADD, anxiety

This answer was rated:

My son is 9 years old and has been struggling with ADD, anxiety and sensory issues since he was diagnosed at 3 years old.
He is currently on ritalin 5mgs daily, concerta 44mgs (27mg +18mg) daily, intuniv 2mgs daily, prozac 30mgs daily, strattera 40mgs daily, and singulair for his asthma. He is already attending occupational therapy for his sensory integration issues.
His appetite has all but disappeared. He used to eat so well. He complains often of headaches and upset stomach.
We are so frustrated at this point and I really don't know where to turn. A pediatric psychiatrist ordered his medicines.
This cocktail does allow him to sit in his chair at school with some degree of concentration but his focus is not consistent.
I was wondering if we should see a holistic M.D..
However, if his focus disimproves he will be asked to leave his current school which he loves and has his "few" friends.
Both my husband and I are so upset now. He is an Internist but doesn't know where to turn either.

We would so appreciate some guidance.

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

Thank you for contacting Just Answer. I am very sorry to hear about what is going on. W O W ! ! ! It is hard to analyze just what the effect may be of all these medications. I have been treating ADD/ADHD children and adults for many years. I have NEVER heard of one person being on ALL those medications at once for ADD. NEVER!!!!! Certainly, the lack of appetite, upset stomach, and headaches are caused by all these medications. No, I would not go the holistic route. Add/ADHD is a genetic disorder. It is not a psychological problem. Who on earth prescribed all these medications? What is the training of the person who prescribed this toxic cocktail? Astounding!!!!! Run, don't just go for a second opinion. But, please, ONLY go to a child psychiatrist. What city, state and zip code are you in?

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

My heart breaks to hear the mistreatment of your son. We must get this remedied.

I'm in Hockessin,Delaware 19707. A child psychiatrist actually did prescribe these medications.

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

It's unbelievable! It makes me think of a little boy that I treated many years ago who was ADD and asthmatic. He is now a grown man. Went to a top private school, Princeton, law school and is not at a top NYC law firm. With the right kind of treatment we can set things straight.

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

Let me look for another child psychiatrist in your area.

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

Now at a top law firm

You have actually made me cry. I thought my precious son would never be able to show his true potential. This is really effecting our whole family. We are devastated. Thank you so much for your help.

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

Hang in there. I am committed to helping you. I am going to look for someone and I will check out their training.

Should I click ACCEPT now or would that disconnect our chat?

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

Clicking ACCEPT will not disconnect the Chat.We can continue after you click ACCEPT. Believe me that little boy I was talking about was all over the place. Look at where he got. Your son can, too. But trust me, with ADD, he needs to be on medication. NOT what he's on. He also needs help to structure him. Let's go the first step --- proper medication. I'm going to look for someone now. I'll be back. I want to also check out credentials.

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

Be back soon.

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

I just wanted to say that this may take me longer than I though because I am checking everybody out, so please be patient. I'll be back as soon as I find someone.

Once I click ACCEPT it tells me I will exit our chat. I have clicked it a few times and got the same response. Anyway, I promise I will click it at the end of our conversation. Thanks again.

Dr. Schaye, are you still there?. I hope I haven't lost you.

Dr. Shirley Schaye :

You haven't lost me, don't worry. I am just looking over everyone's credentials very, very carefully. That's why it's taking me long. I want to be sure that your son gets someone who is properly trained.
