The useless, hopeless feeling is worrisome and I would ask this person if she has thoughts of hurting her/himself. If these thoughts are present then go to the closest emergency room for am assessment for "safety". This is the priority.

Second priority to is help this person get to a psychiatrist to get onto the proper medications.

Third priority, counseling to help this person work through the useless, hopeless feeling.

Thanks for caring about this person and I hope you can help him/her.
Good luck and warm regards,
