I have Bipolar I disorder with over 12 hospitilzation for mania

I have Bipolar I disorder with over 12 hospitilzation for mania and depression. I am on a variety of meds including a Lithium level of 1.3. My husband has Bipolar II. We want to have a baby. Is there a high chance that our child will be Bipolar?

Of all the psychiatric illnesses, Bipolar disorder has the highest potential for genetic inheritance. The chance of a baby from a bipolar couple inheriting bipolar disorder is about 9 times greater than in the general popoulation - 9% against 1% - but looking at it another way, that's a very small chance indeed.

Statistically thre are very good odds are that your child would not have bipolar disorder.
