I have a 21 yr old son, who has just started antidepressants avanza a few weeks ago, last week he tried to commit suicide and went into a psych unit in hospital for a few days. We are waiting to get evaluation as to whether or not he is autistic, because he is a very young 21 yr old we are trying to see a person who deals with adolescents.. reading up and looking at the signs this may very well be true..we feel so helpless and unsure as to how to treat him how to talk to him, he has always been very hard to talk to and tells my ex husband and i nothing...we always tell him how much we love him, i actually dont know why i am writing this to you, i dont know at the moment if its my son or me or my ex who needs help...i know there is nothing we can really do until we get him evaluated.... i guess i dont really know what i am looking for...is there any thing more we can do while waiting? Karen

Hi,

Thank you for using Just Answer.

Sometimes you may just need to write down how you feel, and that is a positive activity. It sounds as if you are very supportive of your son, which will help him regardless of what the evaluation determines. Support, love, and understanding are the characteristics most beneficial with any diagnosis.

If you are interested in learning more about this diagnosis, I am enclosing some websites:

These will provide you with information and experiences related to autism.

Please let me know if you have other questions. Gina
