Dr. Simon, My son fits to a tee a character disordered person.

Resolved Question:

Dr. Simon,
My son fits to a tee a character disordered person. He is 22. He thinks he is fine even though he is always in trouble for his lying, lack of responsibility etc. How can we, his parents , help his disordered thinking and if we could get him to see someone (highly unlikely) would they understand how to help a character disordered person?

Hello Mary,

By character disordered person, I am assuming that you meant to ask about personality disorder. Personality disorder are difficult to diagnosed and are also very difficult to treat. He will be needing a professional help if he is suffering from any such disorder. For this your son needs to be seen by a Psychiatrist as they are specially trained to treat this disorder. A psychiatric evaluation will also be useful if he has any other psychiatric problem which frequently eoexists in patient suffering from personality disorder.

I don't know if we are talking about a personality disorder. I am talking about a character like Dr. Simon talks about in his book "A wolf in sheeps clothing. Is that the same thing?"

Mary, although I have not read this book but I guess in this book Dr Simon describes psychopathic personalities who manipulates their victim for personal gain.

Psychopaths in Sheep's Clothing

Psychopath personality is another way of classifying personality disorder and it somewhat resembles antisocial personality disorder according to DSM 4 diagnostic criteria proposed by American Psychiatric association.

Psychopathy

Antisocial personality disorder

Whatever be the name, he will be needing help of psychiatrist / psychologist for treatment if he is suffering from this disorder.
