have a 1984 518 cat that hesitates when shifting from forward to reverse and now sometimes wont move at all replaced charge pump on transmission someone mentioned about could be pressure getting to transmission doesn't do it all the time when it does work works fine no slipping or anything

Usually this is due to wear in the control valve. The spools and safety valve will not hold pressure correctly and lock valve into neutral until pressures are normal.
You could remove the valve and inspect it for damage. You may find debris plugging someone orifices and that may fix the issue but it is rare considering the age of the machine.
