Customer Question

I have a 2003 Freightliner Sprinter 2.7-5cyl
Truck does nor restart when engine is hot. have to wait 45 min or so until engine cools down, than will restart.
Had truck at local MB-Sprinter dealer for over a week, and after replacing 2 glow plugs, one injector low pressure/high pressure fuel pump etc it worked for about 1 week.
Problem is back and MB could not find anything wrong after having truck for 3 days. now truck also smokes when down shifting on hills.
Any idea what could be wrong?

The MAF and ATC work together to determine ambient air temp, is also used for percentage variation of eng temp sensor. if variance exceeds 15% will no be able to calculate accurate eng/ambient temp for fuel. Best have scan tool to monitor ATC (by front lic plate) MAF (air intake) and eng temp sensor (coolant port). Also Sprinter TSB note: as follows:Case ####-##-####ehicle Issue Engine Cranks And Will Not Start Or Engine Has An Excessive Crank Time.;Turns over but will not start up. Abnormal or lengthy starter crank time.System or Component Programming Issue,Hard Start, Long Crank Time,Engine Cranks;Customer Concern (No DTCs);Starting System,Group 18 - Vehicle Performance / Driveability;Yes - Intermittent,Yes - ContinuouslyRecommendation Inspect injectors for fuel leakage. If condition is excessive crank time and/or no start, perform the following. Use DAS system under "check fuel leak quantity at injector" test. Replace leaking injector. Note: 3/8" ID clear tubing can be used in place of injector test tubes shown in DAS test. If injector is faulty, the following parts are required are injector part no A6110701287, 1 stretch bolt part no A0049902812, 1 seal ring part no A6110170060 and special grease part no 001989425110. Note: bad injector can also create a complaint of a a tapping noise or clicking noise from engine. Torque injector to 62 inch lbs + 90 degrees (1/4 turn). If this is a crank but no start issue, perform the following. Remove injection pump and inspect for damaged drive plate...This condition will not set fault code. Per engineering, if the drive plate is destroyed, the timing chain has stretched beyond acceptable limits. Engine replacement is required. It is also necessary to check for metal particles in fuel system. Fuel tank will have to be removed and fuel sending unit removed from tank. If there are any metal particles in bottom of tank at baffle, the fuel tank will have to be replaced along with flushing fuel system and replacing filter..

If they only replaced one injector, it sounds like the others are failing behind it apparently. Further testing will have to be done according to this bulletin. You may want to replace all injectors and start fresh.
